Son of John Randolph and Margaret McNeill Burks
Daniel was born in or near Bowling Green, Kentucky on February 22, 1805, one of seven sons of John Randolph and Margaret (Peg) McNeill Burks. The family was originally from South Carolina, where two of his older brothers, Roland and Joseph, were born. In 1811 the father and sons left Kentucky, the mother having died, and set out down the Mississippi on a flatboat.
Daniel, when seven years old, served as a drummer boy in the War of 1812.
Daniel started farming and was married to Jane Smith (Feb. 11, 1809 - Jan. 20, 1898) on December 9, 1824 in Marion County, Mississippi by Justice Of The Peace Jesse Moody.
They had ten children: Carolyn, died young; Sara A., married Sephen Moody; Margaret, married George Walker; Andrew J., married Mary Seal; Roland E., married Rebecca Cooper; Joseph, married Elizabeth Ann Wheat; William, married (1) Margaret Mitchell, (2) Lottie Mitchell; Eliza, married William E. Stockstill; Anna J., married William Stewart; and John B., died young.
