"Hero of Cat Island"
Juan Jose de Cuevas was born July 8th, 1762 to Pedro de Cuevas and Ysabel Batista in the town of Algamitas, in the province of Andalusia, of the diocese of Malaga in southern Spain. In 1795, Juan would marry Marie Helene Ladner, the daughter of Nicholas Christian Ladner and his wife Marie Anne Paquet and settle on Cat Island. From this union, twelve children would be born, Juan Jose, Jr., Helene, Francois Ignacio, Bridgette Monique, Celeste Galixte, Marie Anastasie, Marie Solitelle, Pierre Baptiste, Charles Ferdinand, Ramon, Euphrosine, and Henrietta Pauline. In 1810, Juan would purchase Cat Island from his mother-in-law after the passing of Christian. He would go on to become the Patriarch of one of the largest pioneer founding families from New Orleans, LA to Mobile, AL. Known as the "Hero of Cat Island" legend has it Juan fired the first shots in 1814 during the battle of New Orleans against the British Fleet who had anchored on Cat Island. He would live out the rest of his life on the island and be buried there in 1849. A short time later, his remains, along with the remains of Marie Anastasie, were reinterred here in the Family Tomb. In 1853, his beloved wife Marie Helen would join them.
