Mamie Lou BULLIG

Carson Springs Baptist Church Cemetery
Walthall County,
Mississippi

December 6, 1902 - July 3, 1985

Mamie was the eleventh and youngest child of Alfred G. Fortenberry and Tular A. Bilbo. She was married first in 1918 to Charlie Fortenberry, the son of William Fortenberry. She was married second, about 1933, to Valentine Fred Bullig, born in Brooklyn, NY in 1894 and died about 1942 during WWII. Val Bullig was the son of John and Mary Bullig of Brooklyn, New York. He appears on the 1900 census with his parents and several siblings living in Brooklyn. He had a first wife, with whom he was living in 1930, then shortly thereafter married Mamie. He was living with her and a son Valentine, aged 6, in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1940.

Val was a member of the merchant marine and was issued a Jewish Servicemen's card during World War II, giving his full name and naming Mamie Bullig as his next of kin. He appears on a roster of World War II dead, giving his service number, 89794. It is not known how or when he died, and whether he was buried on land or at sea, or if his body was recovered. Following his death, Mamie lived as a widow for more than 40 years.
