Jeff
1861 - 29 Jan 1943
Mr. Jeff D. Davis, beloved and revered citizen of the Whitesand community, died at the family home early Friday morning from an attack of pneumonia. He had been in ill health for a number of years, and when the attack came, in his weakened physical condition he was unable to withstand the ravages of the disease.
Mr. Davis was born and reared in Jasper county but had been a resident of Jefferson Davis county for the past 38 years. Until ill health forced his retirement he had been a successful farmer, and all through his long life had been a lover of the simple things of life. There was no affectation about him, no desire for public acclaim. He deeply loved his family and home and chose to spend his declining years around his own hearthstone. There his relatives and friends were always assured of a cordial welcome from him and his good wife.
He was 82 years old last October. In early young manhood he was married to a Miss Broom and to this union two children were born, a daughter who died some years ago and a son, T. Claude Davis, who now resides in Alexandria, La.
Later he was married to Miss Sally Atwood, who has been his faithful helpmate for 56 years, they having celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the home of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Davis of Prentiss six years ago.
The last rites for this good man were held from Bethany Church of which he was a member, Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock, with his pastor, Rev. Joe Hudson officiating, assisted by Dr. W. L. Holcomb, pastor of the Prentiss Baptist Church. Interment was made in the church cemetery.
Active pall bearers were his grandsons, Robert Ray Davis, Willard Davis, Cecil Davis, Davis Butler, Billie Hurst and Jim Clark. Honorary bearers were Messrs. John Burrow, Otho Fortenberry, Richard Graves, Jim Loftin, Ransom Rankin and D. A. McGee.
Immediate survivors are his wife, Mrs. Sally Atwood Davis; four sons, T. Claude Davis, Alexandria, La.; Johnnie L. Davis, Bassfield; M. M. Davis and Homer L. Davis, Prentiss; three daughters, Mrs. Addie Parker, Mrs. Kate Hurst and Mrs. Edna Cannon, Prentiss; one brother, Marron Davis of this county and a number of grandchildren.
