Brilla WALKER GRAVES

Bethany Cemetery
Jefferson Davis County,
Mississippi

James
1895-1949
The many friends of James Richard Graves were shocked, and deeply grieved, to learn of the tragic death which occurred while he was at work on his farm near Prentiss Saturday morning. He was engaged in moving logs with his tractor, when the machine turned over and pinned him underneath, killing him instantly.

Funeral services were held from Bethany Church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with Rev. Joe W. Hudson of Bassfield, and the pastor, Rev. L. W. Chaney, officiating. Interment was made in the church cemetery with Walden's Funeral Home in charge.

Mr. Graves was a man about whom no disparaging remark was ever heard. All who knew him held him in highest esteem for his sterling traits of character. One of his close friends, who mourned his passing as that of a brother, had this to say of him; "Richard was always so busy attending to his own business he never had time to meddle in the affairs of others." He was one of the hardest working men we ever knew, and he never counted it a hardship to toil with his hands, but a blessed privilege. He was a successful farmer and fruit grower and managed his farm always according to latest improved practices. He was a devoted husband and father, a good neighbor, and loyal friend. The large crowd that came to pay a last tribute of respect to his memory, and the many lovely blossoms that covered his resting place, attest to the love and esteem in which he was held.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Brilla Walker Graves; a son, Clyde Graves; a brother, Walter Graves of Hammond, La.; three sisters, Mrs. Fred Byrnes, Baskin, La.; Mrs. Crayton Smith, Wisner, La./ and Mrs. Bessie Stien of Fort Worth, Texas
