Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Saulters Funeral Home Chapel for Specialist 5 Burl David Holloway, 20, of Bassfield, who was killed early Friday morning when the car he was driving struck a bridge guard rail on a county road east of Bassfield. Rev. W. H. Merritt, pastor of the Bassfield Baptist Church officiated and interment followed in the Dublin Cemetery with Saulters Funeral Home in charge.
Young Holloway was a native of the Prentiss area, had formerly resided in Columbia and at the time of his death was stationed in Jackson where he was assigned to the Army Recruiting Office. He had been in service almost two years and had served a tour of duty in Viet Nam. He was a Baptist.
The flaming wreckage of the car in which he was traveling alone was found in a creek bed east of Bassfield early Friday morning. Dr. Frank Leggett, County Coroner, and Sheriff G. O. Berry investigated. The Prentiss fire department assisted in extinguishing the fire so the body could be removed from the car.
Survivors include his father, Burl Holloway of Bassfield, his mother, Mrs. Charles McAlpin of Byhalia, Miss.; one brother, Dennis Holloway of Bassfield; one sister, Mrs. Jimmy Robbins of Bassfield; three half-sisters, Mrs. Jimmy Smith of Prentiss; Mrs. Charles Garner of Carson; and Mrs. James Jones of New Hebron.
