A funeral service with military honors was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Improve Baptist Church, Columbia, MS for Mr. C.M. Brewer, 91 of Columbia/Improve, MS who passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, January 12, 2012. Rev's Darell Daniels, Hiram Campbell, and Randy Gardner officiated the service. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Brewer was born on October 18, 1920 to the late Floyd and Dora Brown Brewer, and was a member of the Improve Baptist Church. He served as former State FFA Advisor and State Supervisor of Agriculture Education. Mr. Brewer began teaching at Mt. Olive High School in 1948 and later taught at Improve High School. In 1968 he joined the State Department of Education as Director of the FFA Camp and Farm at Grenada. From this position he moved into the Executive Secretary of the FFA slot, and then became State Supervisor.
Over the course of his career he was instrumental in expanding the facilities at Grenada, implementing the FFA Foundation, securing passage of a 12 month employment bill through the State Legislature, and creating the FFA Center at Raymond that is named in his honor. Mr. Brewer retired in 1983.
Mr. Brewer honorably served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he received the Purple Heart, and Silver Star. He enjoyed gardening, reading, and playing his harmonica, especially his favorite, The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Marie Williams Brewer of Improve, two sons; David Earl Brewer (Bridget) of Ozark, AR, and James Allen Brewer of Columbia, MS, a daughter, Virginia Ann Robertson (Rodney) of Columbia, MS, a sister, Merle Taylor (Bob) of Welsh, LA, a sister in law, Bernell Brewer of Magee, MS, nine grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren, one great -great grandchild, and a number of nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Brewer.
