Isham Warren Garrott was born in Wake County, North Carolina in 1816 to Isham Garrott, Sr. He attended the University of North Carolina from 1837 to 1840 where he studied law. He married Margaret M Fletcher on January 8, 1845 in Perry County, Alabama. He became Colonel of the 20th Alabama Regiment in 1861. He served at Port Gibson, Champion Hill and Vicksburg. He was killed by a sharpshooter on June 17, 1863 at Vicksburg. Promotion to Brigadier General came a few days after his death.
