June 3, 1815 - June 27, 1863
Martin Edwin Green was born June 3, 1815 in Fauquier County, Virginia to James Stephens and Elizabeth Green. On January 28, 1836 he married Margaret Jane Marks and they moved to Lewis County, Missouri. There he ran a sawmill with his brothers and served as a judge at the county court. In 1861 he formed a cavalry regiment in the Missouri State Guard. He served at Lexington, Pea Ridge, Iuka and Corinth. He was commissioned Brigadier General July 21, 1862 and commanded a brigade of Bowen's Division at Vicksburg. He was wounded June 25, 1863, but only slightly. On June 27, 1863 he was shot in the head and killed by a Union sharpshooter.
