John Stevens Bowen was born on October 30, 1830 in Bowen's Creek, Georgia to William and Ann Bowen. He attended the University of Georgia but left in 1846 before graduating. He graduated from the U S Military Academy in 1853. He was Second Lieutenant of US Mounted Rifles when he resigned in 1856 to become an architect. In 1861 he commissioned as Captain of the Missouri State Guard. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on April 15, 1861 and garnered the rank of Brigadier General on March 14, 1862 and was assigned to Breckenridges Division of the Army of the Mississippi. On May 25, 1863 he was promoted to Major General. He served in the battles of Grand Gulf, Port Gibson, Champion Hill and at Vicksburg. After the surrender at Vicksburg he developed a severe case of dysentery. His wife had him taken to Raymond before they could arrive they stopped at the Walton home, Valley Farm at Edwards, where General Bowen died the next day. He was buried on the Walton family farm and later reinterred at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg.
