Errol Joseph "Budda" Collier, 77, a native of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi and a resident of Mobile since the age of five, passed away peacefully after a long period of declining health. Budda retired from the Post Office in 2003 after over 44 years of service in various craft and management positions. He was active in St. Matthew Church, serving as lector and devoting much time and effort to its maintenance. He was an early recipient of the annual Archdiocesan Christ the King Medal representing St. Matthew Parish wherein each parish church recognizes a parishioner for exemplary service to the parish community. Budda was very active socially and was a member of several organizations including the Knights of Columbus, Council 666, Archbishop T.J. Toolen Assembly 0001, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and a mystic society in which Budda was a member for nearly 60 years, serving in many capacities including President and King, receiving numerous awards and recognition for his contributions. He graduated from McGill Institute with the class of 1958, attended Springhill College, and served in the U. S. Air Force as an air traffic controller. Budda was a great friend and a caregiver who devoted much time and effort caring for his mother, father, and brother, as well as other extended family members and friends. A lifelong bachelor, Budda is preceded in death by his father, James J. Collier, his mother, Elsie Fayard Collier, and brother, Aubrey Collier. He leaves behind many cousins and their children, many lifelong friends and a lifetime of memories of friendships and good times. Budda had very much appreciated all the visits, cards, flowers, and well-wishes from all who kept in touch with him during his illness. Special thanks are expressed for the generous, loving, and selfless care that his close friend from grammar school, Peggy Kelly, and his close friend and cousin, Mike Collier, provided during his difficult and lengthy period of need. The staff and nurses at Palm Gardens and at Alabama Hospice are also commended for their care. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Matthew Catholic Church on Wednesday February 1, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. Visitation before mass will begin at 9:00.
